<br />
It's odd to think about it now but Oklahoma had only been a state for seven decades at that time and it was a hadron supercollider of a place.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVwzfTs1tOq-jy45539g2_LVY6L6B4-kLSQDa2ABLAdjb7xdWZnbvPqfwSGQ0PnPfLnDteWoAOvXnm8z4oYeng1oxMhhebMA7P7rKSTiuequB2GxwvlFH-H5c_MlITSGeCPVpWng/s1600/boomtown.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="499" data-original-width="329" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVwzfTs1tOq-jy45539g2_LVY6L6B4-kLSQDa2ABLAdjb7xdWZnbvPqfwSGQ0PnPfLnDteWoAOvXnm8z4oYeng1oxMhhebMA7P7rKSTiuequB2GxwvlFH-H5c_MlITSGeCPVpWng/s320/boomtown.jpg" width="209" /></a></div>
<br />
According to <i>Boom Town: The Fantastical Saga of Oklahoma City, its Chaotic Founding... its Purloined Basketball Team, and the Dream of Becoming a World-class Metropolis</i>, “Oklahoma was a hadron supercollider of a place. People and creatures were thrown together from distant points and at unpredictable angles, again and again and again and again. Despite its relative material poverty, its lack of obvious treasure, Oklahoma always had this unusual talent for improvised community.”<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgY0jXI-cIrerdRVyth5ffVvrx0YXctbe0AQ8TcoGUD-loz1jn8vRa8pzcSOza4scVJ5yJC8JuVyymnXDkPfEfqqLinAwTrn00Vgqu5DlSepw4XIz4gg2OxktUUHFb8clW9eF-k2w/s1600/phillips66.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="231" data-original-width="220" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgY0jXI-cIrerdRVyth5ffVvrx0YXctbe0AQ8TcoGUD-loz1jn8vRa8pzcSOza4scVJ5yJC8JuVyymnXDkPfEfqqLinAwTrn00Vgqu5DlSepw4XIz4gg2OxktUUHFb8clW9eF-k2w/s1600/phillips66.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
That improvised community is what I discovered upon my arrival in <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bartlesville,_Oklahoma" target="_blank">Bartlesville.</a> Many holding brand new bachelors, masters, and doctoral degrees, all kinds of cool people came together from distant points in order to support the growing technical and research needs of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phillips_Petroleum_Company" target="_blank">Phillips Petroleum Company</a>.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvAey5JqUqjRRaMad0aXeARojztKRWZzvVps9qBmfX0GqjFHsdTOmVJAij0gYrjvjKT8SZbSI4eY04WF5xm_AYSyrSHYIPyj7CG9mHvQvCTPwN_8gAmK6IEWUjJnIbk5KYjfX5zg/s1600/Oklahoma_Land_Rush.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="400" data-original-width="740" height="215" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvAey5JqUqjRRaMad0aXeARojztKRWZzvVps9qBmfX0GqjFHsdTOmVJAij0gYrjvjKT8SZbSI4eY04WF5xm_AYSyrSHYIPyj7CG9mHvQvCTPwN_8gAmK6IEWUjJnIbk5KYjfX5zg/s400/Oklahoma_Land_Rush.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
What an exciting time! Somewhat like the folks that collided during the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Land_Rush_of_1889" target="_blank">land rush of 1889</a>, we software developers and such collided a century later in the 1980s and became involved members of the Phillips and Bartlesville community. We started our careers; we played at something every night of the week; and we developed lifelong friendships. <br />
<br />
In addition to people collisions, the air was also known to collide with the ground. Once during my seven years in Bartlesville, the town was hit by a tornado on Monday evening, March 15, 1982. (Beware the ides of March!) The tornado was an F2 (strong) twister based on estimated wind speeds of 113 to 157 miles per hour but I escaped unharmed from the safe confines of my bathtub.<br />

<br />
A family member of mine has also come to love Bartlesville for reasons completely different from my own. The architectural gems by <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bruce_Goff" target="_blank">Bruce Goff</a> went unnoticed by me all those years ago but these creative collisions of glass and stone now get lots of my attention.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Looking back on my first adult home, Bartlesville was the ideal spot to begin my post-college adulthood and that's <i>because </i>Bartlesville was a hadron supercollider of a place.<br />
<br />
Yours in gratitude for the 46th state,<br />

I asked if he was
pleased with the Songs from the West Coast album and he said he wasn't too happy about it. When Elton asked if I could sing, I replied that I
could play the piano better than I could sing and invited him in to hear
me play Carla Etude when we got back to the house. He seemed pleased
with the suggestion of that little-known song. When we arrived home, I
ran ahead, organized my piano music, and put Elton’s
music on top, so he would know how much I loved him. <br />
<br />
And Elton loves me too. For 40 years, he has followed me around the country.<br />
<br />
When I lived in...<br />
<ul>
<li> ...Bartlesville, Elton played two Tulsa concerts in 1980 and 1982.</li>
<li>...Kansas City, Elton played outdoors at <a href="https://www.providenceamp.com/about-the-venue.html" target="_blank">Sandstone Amphitheater</a> in 1986.</li>
<li>...Indianapolis, Elton played at <a href="https://www.bankerslifefieldhouse.com/" target="_blank">Conseco Fieldhouse</a> in 2000 and 2005.</li>
<li>...Charlottesville, Elton played at <a href="https://www.johnpauljonesarena.com/" target="_blank">John Paul Jones Arena</a> in 2008. </li>
<li>...Aurora, Elton played outdoors at the <a href="https://www.woodlandscenter.org/" target="_blank">Woodlands Pavilion</a> in Houston in 2015, at the <a href="http://www.dennysanfordpremiercenter.com/" target="_blank">Denny Sanford Premier Center</a> in Sioux Falls in 2015, at the <a href="https://www.pepsicenter.com/" target="_blank">Pepsi Center</a> in Denver last week, and at the <a href="http://www.sprintcenter.com/home" target="_blank">Sprint Center</a> in Kansas City last night. </li>
</ul>
And while he was in my neighborhood, I attended each of those ten
concerts. It would have been rude of me not to go after he had traveled
all that way.<br />
<br />
Each of the concerts was fantastic whether I was sitting in <a href="http://johnston9494.blogspot.com/2008/10/342-elton-his-gift-is-his-song.html" target="_blank">third row seats in Charlottesville</a>
or sitting near the top of the arena in my usual cheap seats. No matter my proximity to the stage, I usually cry a couple of times during an Elton concert. Many of his soulful songs evoke such strong emotion: Candle in the Wind, Your Song, Tiny
Dancer. My least favorite is Bennie and the Jets and my most favorite
are Levon and Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting. I also love Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters and wish he'd play that
more often. <br />
<br />
It was the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goodbye_Yellow_Brick_Road" target="_blank">Goodbye Yellow Brick Road</a>
double album that rocked my world in 1973. Since then, I've loved his albums, his
concerts, his movies, and his musicals. And just last year, <a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5788792/" target="_blank">The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel</a>’s
first season ended with Curtains (1975). So now I love his television
music too.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Last night in Kansas City, ten friends from Charlottesville, Colorado Springs, Kansas City, Loveland, and Sparks, NV came together to celebrate Elton's musical genius during his <a href="https://www.eltonjohn.com/stories/farewell-yellow-brick-road" target="_blank">Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour</a>. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlloSzQuHEDnc-o5YRfcIM8_mguHQUFEX0fcjFAaFPJ2W9bA3R7jBIyNusK8yX2pI8xDdCLQkaA86uJKu-4et0ZyO7vji8XeQAAsXrDRYRVzdyn980Zm87g4U3HxlLtvzZMTJgIw/s1600/20190213+Elton+fans.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlloSzQuHEDnc-o5YRfcIM8_mguHQUFEX0fcjFAaFPJ2W9bA3R7jBIyNusK8yX2pI8xDdCLQkaA86uJKu-4et0ZyO7vji8XeQAAsXrDRYRVzdyn980Zm87g4U3HxlLtvzZMTJgIw/s400/20190213+Elton+fans.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
To properly celebrate Elton's farewell and the reunion of our friends, something flashy was required. So we stopped by the <a href="https://ustoy.com/" target="_blank">US Toy Company</a> to get the one thing we need for an Elton farewell concert: feather boas. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEkxcP9dSQIiOSOerhDj0VUYl-KiEgVfg2hJezqQmT-MRLojiwAeL-loDADKRXeg8PWLCL2hJco5JO6mskNTWYJq3YfQwZnPJIQzE92aviPGRN_sEK2BQ2jU-7MDHc77tUW6MwZg/s1600/IMG-0189.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEkxcP9dSQIiOSOerhDj0VUYl-KiEgVfg2hJezqQmT-MRLojiwAeL-loDADKRXeg8PWLCL2hJco5JO6mskNTWYJq3YfQwZnPJIQzE92aviPGRN_sEK2BQ2jU-7MDHc77tUW6MwZg/s400/IMG-0189.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
And when we picked up our friends at the airport, it was not too difficult to distinguish between us and the other drivers waiting at the gate. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Elton and his fans have been a constant throughout my life. Just as six of Elton's albums are included on the <a href="https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-lists/500-greatest-albums-of-all-time-156826/?list_page=1#list-item-500" target="_blank">Rolling Stones' list of 500 Greatest Albums of All Time</a>, all of these friends are on the Johnston list of Greatest Friends of All Time.<br />

<br />
Last night, the Kansas City crowd was beyond enthusiastic. Elton and the band seemed so happy to be on stage. They were having fun and we were having fun. Elton rocked Levon better than ever. For three hours, he made me dance, he made me laugh, and he made me cry. We were even <a href="https://fox4kc.com/2019/02/13/sir-elton-john-says-farewell-yellow-brick-road-in-final-kansas-city-concert/" target="_blank">interviewed for the Kansas City news</a>!<br />
<br />
Thanks, Elton, for all of it. And thanks, friends, for sharing it all with us. I'm emotional, sappy, and grateful. And from now on, I promise to wear more feather boas.<br />

<br />
I've put those tools to work in every house where I've lived. So the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Takenaka_Carpentry_Tools_Museum" target="_blank">carpentry tools museum</a> in Kobe, Japan is a must visit.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtx6Oen0RcVmcLc6vMfoG9OKMFjkieEyRXE9kVB1IdgoPu_BosRMZW8O0cy7ldsuFHHlJ6d_T_y22L5RN9DXQ0ANNLlIO0RXEU8Iji99Yjw6xwTxazYq4rFwEZ_UKXVYgn9Xtceg/s1600/20181204+11+Kobe+Kelly+carpentry+tools+museum.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1164" data-original-width="1070" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtx6Oen0RcVmcLc6vMfoG9OKMFjkieEyRXE9kVB1IdgoPu_BosRMZW8O0cy7ldsuFHHlJ6d_T_y22L5RN9DXQ0ANNLlIO0RXEU8Iji99Yjw6xwTxazYq4rFwEZ_UKXVYgn9Xtceg/s400/20181204+11+Kobe+Kelly+carpentry+tools+museum.jpg" width="367" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
The "wow" entrance makes it clear this is part carpentry museum and part Japanese garden, all mindfully organized.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgqwCTmF9X_F9u6HBX6Wkn4aYbEMOvlz_8WpK2i6WvrfBTnZfR9Ra_Qn7E9HcBY32Yc-fBfhvjXZIwIcejALBw2zO6WsCnuHzgewIbDLui85kyEW51H0aQly3WnYT-OR-jjW0eMQ/s1600/20181204+33+Kobe+carpentry+tools+museum.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="827" data-original-width="1600" height="330" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgqwCTmF9X_F9u6HBX6Wkn4aYbEMOvlz_8WpK2i6WvrfBTnZfR9Ra_Qn7E9HcBY32Yc-fBfhvjXZIwIcejALBw2zO6WsCnuHzgewIbDLui85kyEW51H0aQly3WnYT-OR-jjW0eMQ/s640/20181204+33+Kobe+carpentry+tools+museum.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The English language brochure and unusual tickets made a good first impression.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
This full set of carpentry tools consumes an entire wall.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Some tools, like this wooden 'open-air' chalk line are new to me.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Some tools, like this massive 'smoothing plane' and its resultant perfectly peeled translucent shaving are almost beyond belief.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Carpenters care about matching the best wood species to a project, so the museum displays the real trees and encourages touching and smelling their shavings.<br />

But not all was lost. The hotel entrance and lobby were spared, then disassembled and moved over 200 miles to be restored and reassembled on the grounds of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meiji-mura" target="_blank">Meiji-Mura</a>, an outdoor museum with 59 other rescued structures.<br />

<br />
But the stained glass (Wright's "light screens") is relatively simple.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-aVJ5lhlRcZa_qiX9BaKiAQ2-FmaR9pf53nKJKl1G8glQV77ekHan9xTNYG40AsLgZdeyVmaGV53a7ulvgYW1Pm9xMYWPUE47usPk8F0XTyXpWKQVvYlhEr2GenKcW0kn9tyoIg/s1600/20181205+57+Meiji+Mura+Wright%2527s+Imperial+Hotel+stained+glass.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1440" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-aVJ5lhlRcZa_qiX9BaKiAQ2-FmaR9pf53nKJKl1G8glQV77ekHan9xTNYG40AsLgZdeyVmaGV53a7ulvgYW1Pm9xMYWPUE47usPk8F0XTyXpWKQVvYlhEr2GenKcW0kn9tyoIg/s640/20181205+57+Meiji+Mura+Wright%2527s+Imperial+Hotel+stained+glass.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The one-person window seat follows the rectilinear theme.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
But if you look closely you'll find curved elements in the design as well.<br />

We found this Central Perk duplicate in Shanghai.<br />

Ross and Rachel could walk through the door any minute and plop down on that big orange couch, it seemed.<br />

<br />
We drank our coffee and reminisced about old Friends story lines. The Chinese baristas were intently focused on the endless Friends loop playing on the TV. They laughed at all the jokes. So did we!<br />

In Shanghai, we found <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1933_Old_Millfun" target="_blank">slaughterhouse architecture</a>.<br />
<br />
In 1933, the Shanghai Municipal Council built the largest slaughterhouse in Shanghai.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizc7QOxCE99Vn6VOXTVp325nxxtiIJLSW5u53BAX8FkU5CEyE1Yf7JSEzB6vbFF0DboLfjvH-5DFoa9qdcD9WxbvVn8XDSEjBc76vBLoBja0ck2gSO_n7KcsIyPZ1V9xPiwNAUDw/s1600/20181125+06+Shanghai.+1933+Old+Millfun+slaughterhouse.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1371" height="504" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizc7QOxCE99Vn6VOXTVp325nxxtiIJLSW5u53BAX8FkU5CEyE1Yf7JSEzB6vbFF0DboLfjvH-5DFoa9qdcD9WxbvVn8XDSEjBc76vBLoBja0ck2gSO_n7KcsIyPZ1V9xPiwNAUDw/s640/20181125+06+Shanghai.+1933+Old+Millfun+slaughterhouse.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
A brutalist concrete building with Art Deco elements, the design included 26 "air bridges" connecting a rectangular outer building with a circular inner building.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMYybJE64k4YOtT2Ky1GhforvO6qVp8ieZHFw8p37VNwTcubDfS7pA0aONGDY_v4jSfIGmbNplu8wa4lNNEucTFAsSUjYEbPsuWtwbzCqjI5qiHhlaK2GQJbImWCHQ-D217_qa9w/s1600/20181125+16+Shanghai.+1933+Old+Millfun+slaughterhouse.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="937" data-original-width="1600" height="374" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMYybJE64k4YOtT2Ky1GhforvO6qVp8ieZHFw8p37VNwTcubDfS7pA0aONGDY_v4jSfIGmbNplu8wa4lNNEucTFAsSUjYEbPsuWtwbzCqjI5qiHhlaK2GQJbImWCHQ-D217_qa9w/s640/20181125+16+Shanghai.+1933+Old+Millfun+slaughterhouse.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The gap between outer and inner is open to the sky.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
The bridges were designed with varying angles and widths to ease the movement of livestock.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVFMToyEMJ-AnMYyXX26GH1PN3tyHBuc4Eb9MBXeTgId72F8cJIjR1wYbt5nBEeWhfkCjBODyH-_XxCPM3tee6D3Ywg0eakj-627KMkNKIMfPySV3gkY8AFExcRaPc56L1YrZHUg/s1600/20181125+14+Shanghai.+1933+Old+Millfun+slaughterhouse.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1513" height="456" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVFMToyEMJ-AnMYyXX26GH1PN3tyHBuc4Eb9MBXeTgId72F8cJIjR1wYbt5nBEeWhfkCjBODyH-_XxCPM3tee6D3Ywg0eakj-627KMkNKIMfPySV3gkY8AFExcRaPc56L1YrZHUg/s640/20181125+14+Shanghai.+1933+Old+Millfun+slaughterhouse.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Once the slaughterhouse closed, the building was abandoned, but has now been renovated for mixed use including among others a Starbucks, dance studio, doggie day care, drone store, restaurant, furniture store, and a rooftop garden shop.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiF8DxioC8pCBnEULlpAvFFVl4olsMj881cGUA1ObHlqDQyOpe0LyNVbMImMfCLL4FxbIbPSIZDLoc8DPLiNsuqJuF9la6cMIXdxHP0O4h4pSmMSsbhOKCJhE1B1tYtkf3kwhMv6A/s1600/20181125+13+Shanghai.+1933+Old+Millfun+slaughterhouse.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="842" data-original-width="1600" height="336" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiF8DxioC8pCBnEULlpAvFFVl4olsMj881cGUA1ObHlqDQyOpe0LyNVbMImMfCLL4FxbIbPSIZDLoc8DPLiNsuqJuF9la6cMIXdxHP0O4h4pSmMSsbhOKCJhE1B1tYtkf3kwhMv6A/s640/20181125+13+Shanghai.+1933+Old+Millfun+slaughterhouse.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The raw concrete, stark lighting, and Escher-like quality make the renovated building a <a href="http://www.shanghaiartdeco.net/shanghais-art-deco-abbatoir/" target="_blank">magnet for architecture buffs and photographers</a>. But the vision to see these possibilities beyond the filth and stench of an abandoned slaughterhouse is a miracle.<br />
<br />
Yours in appreciating an architectural lemon turned into lemonade,<br />

So we decided to explore Yangon, Myanmar by rail.<br />
<br />
We met our train at the Yangon Central Railway Station, the largest station in Myanmar.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvpXxaWufITHVoRUU1RUwGFhyphenhyphendUtw2QAVv9rxdiEc3GTTE3I-Je4vn8119PF-9v_estJr7zS6SDQiG2HAStnBKkqgnP0hdffOnYkenhFCq09rCkY0yp1fmpTwKJgZopAMnMI5nZA/s1600/20181106+08+Yangon+train+station.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1440" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvpXxaWufITHVoRUU1RUwGFhyphenhyphendUtw2QAVv9rxdiEc3GTTE3I-Je4vn8119PF-9v_estJr7zS6SDQiG2HAStnBKkqgnP0hdffOnYkenhFCq09rCkY0yp1fmpTwKJgZopAMnMI5nZA/s640/20181106+08+Yangon+train+station.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitJp5w6ciZwNo4ho4ITQZ3JtR07mIJth4kiQZb1M8w2GMFHwsvHOhKp7Bo28_JfPPET9fBAnhrmgC4qXq_b9krfMyYbZOozKDB4D9cTMXWIb5PeDtRLWfraXMSgWS4FBO-jU87bA/s1600/20181106+06+Yangon+train+station.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1440" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitJp5w6ciZwNo4ho4ITQZ3JtR07mIJth4kiQZb1M8w2GMFHwsvHOhKp7Bo28_JfPPET9fBAnhrmgC4qXq_b9krfMyYbZOozKDB4D9cTMXWIb5PeDtRLWfraXMSgWS4FBO-jU87bA/s640/20181106+06+Yangon+train+station.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Using the ticket booth map, our excellent guide described the Yangon Circular Railway. It's the local commuter line, a 28-mile loop with 39 stations.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqm1I2IeCuvQk7GXLF77y9f5T4tPg1E5VZ_GxUQtewMs2dqUGuxBpEAwYWSB0WP1Xbq0ybHA3X874FILMh4p2TKSb62-XyQxoio9WW61W8eZU9_Dk6L4NrewZoFhJIh9jgiwxgSA/s1600/20181106+09+Yangon+train+station%252C+map%252C+guide.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1440" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqm1I2IeCuvQk7GXLF77y9f5T4tPg1E5VZ_GxUQtewMs2dqUGuxBpEAwYWSB0WP1Xbq0ybHA3X874FILMh4p2TKSb62-XyQxoio9WW61W8eZU9_Dk6L4NrewZoFhJIh9jgiwxgSA/s640/20181106+09+Yangon+train+station%252C+map%252C+guide.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
At 200 Kyats each, our tickets cost about 13 cents.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSOoECKu5NXxn7ksmVHtSF8GyScXss4hWDXfD9yNrjalNlujqJ5Z0cfFoN9ZxvUHqNyAZHFz67FP1KQCXx3hZtbVVwGv21KLHrlXp5RttEAN3hZA1r-mLNa-nh2ArHR0l_Mq0zAQ/s1600/20181106+13+Yangon+train+tickets.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1440" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSOoECKu5NXxn7ksmVHtSF8GyScXss4hWDXfD9yNrjalNlujqJ5Z0cfFoN9ZxvUHqNyAZHFz67FP1KQCXx3hZtbVVwGv21KLHrlXp5RttEAN3hZA1r-mLNa-nh2ArHR0l_Mq0zAQ/s640/20181106+13+Yangon+train+tickets.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
We rode in one of the newer train cars from China.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
We rode the west side of the loop from the central station and jumped off at a stop near a local fruit market where bananas were unloaded and young Buddhist monks stepped gingerly across the tracks.<br />

We returned twelve years later.<br />
<br />
In 2006, the gleaming Shwedagon Pagoda brightened a dark sky.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUgdljpImBcRMkllAewYf2RQKCv0QCvfDjIV70jM9hn2OcRoqCOoK-eC08QEsUCIvwMikNGQH0o3WX3G0DcoFsPYAbQmWsMRbtdM6u4IY1HIYiv-740306dwL94SJijZ7523FUZA/s1600/1983f+Shwedagon+pagoda.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUgdljpImBcRMkllAewYf2RQKCv0QCvfDjIV70jM9hn2OcRoqCOoK-eC08QEsUCIvwMikNGQH0o3WX3G0DcoFsPYAbQmWsMRbtdM6u4IY1HIYiv-740306dwL94SJijZ7523FUZA/s640/1983f+Shwedagon+pagoda.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />

When we arrived, Rajesh's big smile let me know something was up. He motioned me to follow him, away from the restaurant hubbub, behind the scenes, and into an office toward a large desk. There amid the clutter, a color copy of my Seagull photo was under glass, on display.<br />

Thanksgiving is fun because we like to try our hand at making a turkey without turning on the oven. This relish tray is one of my favorites. </div>

Lately, we've been offered two creative suggestions for future Thanksgiving food art. <br />
<br />
Thanks go to Megan for this colorful fruity turkey idea. <br />

Yours in planning for Thanksgiving 2019,<br />
Mary Kelly and Maryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14919032844351668086noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31107847.post-59976652750228035582018-11-21T01:32:00.000-05:002018-11-21T01:32:57.830-05:00#741 The Mysterious Zero Zero BuoyLatitude zero, longitude zero is a point in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Ghana where the Equator and Prime Meridian cross.<br />
<br />
We've been lucky to visit this spot on the Spring 2011 and Fall 2013 voyages with Semester at Sea.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjClb5qBOFr0HbbpboX7-naKNZRhNevqW0Bd061XWSXCb0VrD0XqJH3iijXjj8MzVBKmVMxUkGgy3zF49TF5mTQR-zOJjNVgjBNCKAdKWGDCGxn0ACeTy67Y1y29b06KMrPYzIpFA/s1600/00.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="546" data-original-width="298" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjClb5qBOFr0HbbpboX7-naKNZRhNevqW0Bd061XWSXCb0VrD0XqJH3iijXjj8MzVBKmVMxUkGgy3zF49TF5mTQR-zOJjNVgjBNCKAdKWGDCGxn0ACeTy67Y1y29b06KMrPYzIpFA/s400/00.jpg" width="217" /></a></div>
<br />
Before both visits to the 0,0 spot, we heard stories about a buoy anchored there. Both times upon arrival we didn't see a buoy. After each visit, we were shown photos allegedly taken from the ship of the elusive 0,0 buoy. Often the photos were accompanied by doubt-inducing commentary.<br />
<br />
So as we approached 0,0 on this Fall 2018 voyage, we were excited to find this note on our cabin door:<i> </i><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>"The Captain invites you to the bridge for the 0,0 crossing at 13:20. Deck 8 forward."</i></div>
<br />
Believe me, we were on time for this appointment! Upon arrival Captain Kostas, binoculars-in-hand, tells us he's looking ahead to spot the buoy.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyzo1i0Lo0rSdAmRbss_S2dW_P4ysh6gg_d1qog_vV6n1dFz6ZnErpzXie61Pg1xTm4uRW1Aeol9r-iI2anoIe8EOZiWWNGlTZgYADCvX15Wdrfiu1UH3WRVmcrHwbvOJzgirSzg/s1600/20181001+17+Equator+crossing%252C+Captain+Kostas.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1440" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyzo1i0Lo0rSdAmRbss_S2dW_P4ysh6gg_d1qog_vV6n1dFz6ZnErpzXie61Pg1xTm4uRW1Aeol9r-iI2anoIe8EOZiWWNGlTZgYADCvX15Wdrfiu1UH3WRVmcrHwbvOJzgirSzg/s400/20181001+17+Equator+crossing%252C+Captain+Kostas.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
And in just a few minutes, we spot the buoy!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPaeiimurLJoEByxogrBLMDD_pzCcqUnJWfUVn8OcR2lR2RVKTI8jmpEL83T0FPzpMirhaIFUjpsYqEORQo5nAowRZHI0XBabmb1XKi5kBEI1CxjAjY25AF784uOBCdzIOyqmKUw/s1600/20181001+24+Equator+crossing%252C+buoy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1440" data-original-width="1080" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPaeiimurLJoEByxogrBLMDD_pzCcqUnJWfUVn8OcR2lR2RVKTI8jmpEL83T0FPzpMirhaIFUjpsYqEORQo5nAowRZHI0XBabmb1XKi5kBEI1CxjAjY25AF784uOBCdzIOyqmKUw/s400/20181001+24+Equator+crossing%252C+buoy.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
It's real! There's a buoy at 0,0. I was so excited my hair stood on end.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDtTjfHgztdvio9llZkUrbXcB6yEXF8Rx30eCuuvr6-RwXlJ5jKgJzHzmTzzsQOp5tQ3iKoU0QqXNe_1S9sY2NiPahXyWF1EvpceGZ3Bkzk6LLyCsNCO1_AFto0eW6c26mJIv9wA/s1600/kjbuoy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="804" data-original-width="1310" height="245" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDtTjfHgztdvio9llZkUrbXcB6yEXF8Rx30eCuuvr6-RwXlJ5jKgJzHzmTzzsQOp5tQ3iKoU0QqXNe_1S9sY2NiPahXyWF1EvpceGZ3Bkzk6LLyCsNCO1_AFto0eW6c26mJIv9wA/s400/kjbuoy.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Then so many questions come to mind. Who decided to put a buoy at 0,0 and why? How does it stay at 0,0 where the ocean is over 16,000 feet deep?<br />
<br />
Making good use of satellite internet, I learn the buoy is part of the <a href="https://www.pmel.noaa.gov/gtmba/" target="_blank">PIRATA</a> (great acronym!) array deployed by a consortium of countries (including the US government agency NOAA) to collect data.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhE9whaPQang2_kEi78scvgxpuqna0iti2Z7G8etwvGtGF-8oyIiIZsL8ojq0o6A461u448wj_1iAG82HkuAaYr-0Y6kIR53GwSQZuJ3PZb93n0Jn-CI-sHXTLITuBOTw2J4J_mug/s1600/2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1422" data-original-width="1600" height="355" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhE9whaPQang2_kEi78scvgxpuqna0iti2Z7G8etwvGtGF-8oyIiIZsL8ojq0o6A461u448wj_1iAG82HkuAaYr-0Y6kIR53GwSQZuJ3PZb93n0Jn-CI-sHXTLITuBOTw2J4J_mug/s400/2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
That answers the 'who' and the 'why'. But what keeps the buoy at 0,0 given the depth? One widely-held theory: the buoy is fitted with GPS and motors its way back to 0,0 if it floats too far away.<br />
<br />
So I emailed NOAA asking about the 'how'. NOAA's reply came quick and strong with diagrams and deployment photos.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjR_Ug2I6q1tmpB67NAqXuSQ-TjDcS00YZS4vS7MyROTE-C6vRHtPchuNI2N6yxqNTnnK9I04haN8HwLZPmbrjQMSrnaDQJnghguxjJf0rgqJT_5CBAINZRWLQaasY-txnMixAH3A/s1600/2a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1084" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjR_Ug2I6q1tmpB67NAqXuSQ-TjDcS00YZS4vS7MyROTE-C6vRHtPchuNI2N6yxqNTnnK9I04haN8HwLZPmbrjQMSrnaDQJnghguxjJf0rgqJT_5CBAINZRWLQaasY-txnMixAH3A/s400/2a.jpg" width="270" /></a></div>
<br />
Yes, the 0,0 buoy is anchored to the ocean floor. This cartoonish drawing makes it seem simple. It's not. A more complex drawing followed with details.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_k52s-a3v_ThknOcsiEgQGnziDE3zRXpvkz_-sohPWvvtBO6rzOiFEhwHErfsRDCg6ru54T4dwc8UV1OzmDUEp_nwcf1Vd4mzHEnNoedNT35TOJ-ag9e5lkenv6UX-LiRIMUH3Q/s1600/2aa.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1047" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_k52s-a3v_ThknOcsiEgQGnziDE3zRXpvkz_-sohPWvvtBO6rzOiFEhwHErfsRDCg6ru54T4dwc8UV1OzmDUEp_nwcf1Vd4mzHEnNoedNT35TOJ-ag9e5lkenv6UX-LiRIMUH3Q/s640/2aa.jpg" width="418" /></a></div>
At the bottom lie over 2 tons of anchor weights made from recycled rail car wheels.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTmSywmvKLHPpzMa760BHLn869fFxbBHgJUft0s0XUlvYIZ79SmK9phmspKas0E6zO5nbgm0mnXPFfiL0CEO-sR9Lu1ZBY3GjeAmcgP8_pzOR7tRcXkMjC9PBP71RcdgdHYRPZKA/s1600/3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1415" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTmSywmvKLHPpzMa760BHLn869fFxbBHgJUft0s0XUlvYIZ79SmK9phmspKas0E6zO5nbgm0mnXPFfiL0CEO-sR9Lu1ZBY3GjeAmcgP8_pzOR7tRcXkMjC9PBP71RcdgdHYRPZKA/s400/3.jpg" width="352" /></a></div>
<br />
It takes a big ship to deploy the assembly.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg06_q6oNpJ54B5BQrtgfkt50GPtMNwYS1vyTSvCIqnQBYLdbluyL-eDFe07vmLcTniXyVCVgnyvi5_PWBf6IdhFKwCCe94CinJlqHCICMbF-5uJjNSTS7ZtmVv8r_rMZ16I7B_uQ/s1600/4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1183" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg06_q6oNpJ54B5BQrtgfkt50GPtMNwYS1vyTSvCIqnQBYLdbluyL-eDFe07vmLcTniXyVCVgnyvi5_PWBf6IdhFKwCCe94CinJlqHCICMbF-5uJjNSTS7ZtmVv8r_rMZ16I7B_uQ/s400/4.jpg" width="295" /></a></div>
<br />
Once the sensors are installed, deployment is complete.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Previous Semester at Sea voyagers raved about Global Mamas, the Ghanaian fair-trade cooperative started by eight women in 2003. We've seen Global Mamas handcrafted products from Ghana <a href="https://www.globalgiftsft.com/pages/locations" target="_blank">for sale in a shop down the street</a> from our home in Indianapolis so we know the Mamas have grown to be a worldwide creative community. But we want to know more.<br />
<br />
So while in Ghana, we visit both the Global Mamas store in Accra and their modest facility in Cape Coast where we learn about their 350 producers from 7 communities all in Ghana supporting local entrepreneurial women and their families.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhivJob6Uj_vvM_rsmdGbyQu33M9TsbkJI6XW9dXpDb5tG4e0O35eSLUSljJtKUZKb3KvukDiqdFs8_b6U5vokj8fNUBovUnawwpj4Jy2ASM0V1EXCO1MDAiFTkDXJ_BMSgNM_i2Q/s1600/20180921+05+Canary+Islands+map.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="659" data-original-width="1116" height="376" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhivJob6Uj_vvM_rsmdGbyQu33M9TsbkJI6XW9dXpDb5tG4e0O35eSLUSljJtKUZKb3KvukDiqdFs8_b6U5vokj8fNUBovUnawwpj4Jy2ASM0V1EXCO1MDAiFTkDXJ_BMSgNM_i2Q/s640/20180921+05+Canary+Islands+map.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Was it to enjoy the vibrant blue Atlantic Ocean and distant mountains backing the port city of Las Palmas deemed by one study as having "the best climate in the world"? <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdVI9YreNo8yWyYpCCSD6umqQ94p9uRc4-BMRVuOcMHGZ4uAdfsVKiouu8TurwQPSoHAwlZ0jQJl_DMA0FYORRRowdCD2dO-LhdVF6WF6W31jMMEHXPjzpx9y4XBb0ae1DzlBBiQ/s1600/20180921+04+MV+World+Odyssey%252C+Canary+Islands+for+refueling.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="714" data-original-width="1600" height="283" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdVI9YreNo8yWyYpCCSD6umqQ94p9uRc4-BMRVuOcMHGZ4uAdfsVKiouu8TurwQPSoHAwlZ0jQJl_DMA0FYORRRowdCD2dO-LhdVF6WF6W31jMMEHXPjzpx9y4XBb0ae1DzlBBiQ/s640/20180921+04+MV+World+Odyssey%252C+Canary+Islands+for+refueling.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Was it to view the large collection of drilling ships anchored nearby? <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhknjjoRjxs51fvxeLAm42gxr3DbH3KIeqIyOo4OshdaYeYlgIOC3C2dmJn5n0JZmddavhC_7B5UL5V53qhTZp7ttuGZu_ihXLs_ghrSuIrTj4VZck_YB6JNwc8Z7TUWROTRHN0Rg/s1600/20180921+11.Drilling+ship+Canary+Island.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhknjjoRjxs51fvxeLAm42gxr3DbH3KIeqIyOo4OshdaYeYlgIOC3C2dmJn5n0JZmddavhC_7B5UL5V53qhTZp7ttuGZu_ihXLs_ghrSuIrTj4VZck_YB6JNwc8Z7TUWROTRHN0Rg/s640/20180921+11.Drilling+ship+Canary+Island.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
It was none of these. Instead we were there to meet a tanker ship for refueling. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeMrLlUUaOqii893CivZ55URd1HCxm7RJN7eJWYgVKJqmZi2rHvjt84rin-WaslAZN5Y2NGU_YGu66np_O6a1uEndClgJhV4c7bmhKfEJMhDyE7wCf9h5QcWK9C-GHuYqfDjHs6A/s1600/20180921+02+MV+World+Odyssey%252C+Canary+Islands+for+refueling.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1440" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeMrLlUUaOqii893CivZ55URd1HCxm7RJN7eJWYgVKJqmZi2rHvjt84rin-WaslAZN5Y2NGU_YGu66np_O6a1uEndClgJhV4c7bmhKfEJMhDyE7wCf9h5QcWK9C-GHuYqfDjHs6A/s640/20180921+02+MV+World+Odyssey%252C+Canary+Islands+for+refueling.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
But why take on fuel in this relatively remote place? Aren't 'island things' always more expensive? <br />
<br />
I found one answer in the reference section of the MV World Odyssey library where the very last print edition (2010) of the Encyclopedia Britannica resides. In Volume 2 the entry for the Canary Islands ends with this paragraph: <br />
<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"The Canary Islands manufacturing industries are small scale outside Santa Cruz de Tenerife whose petroleum refinery processes large quantities of crude oil." </blockquote>
</blockquote>
<br />
Yours in mystery solving in the library,<br />

<br />
Antoni Gaudi designed a rural hillside to be an exclusive neighborhood for Barcelona's elite. But when circumstances doomed those plans, the real estate failure launched one of Barcelona's major attractions, Park Guell. Ornate and wildly ornamented, it opened to the public in 1926.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Across town, sleek, clean, and free of ornamentation, Barcelona Pavilion, the reconstructed modernist masterpiece designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in 1928 stands in start contrast to Gaudi's naturalistic mosaics.<br />

Steel, glass, straight lines, and horizontal floating planes exemplify Mies' architectural theme "less is more".<br />

These two Spanish constructions are close in age only. In Barcelona, we find architectural extremes.<br />

It also involves blue paint.<br />
<br />
Lots of blue paint.<br />

Semester at Sea uses the same ship for the fall and spring semesters. But each summer, the ship sails with German cruise passengers under the name MV Deutschland. We've <a href="https://www.blogger.com/736%20%20%20For%20Semester%20at%20Sea,%20the%20start%20of%20the%20fall%20semester%20involves%20more%20than%20enrolling%20students,%20%20%20hiring%20faculty,%20and%20choosing%20an%20itinerary.%20It%20also%20involves%20blue%20paint.%20Lots%20of%20blue%20paint.%20%20Semester%20at%20Sea%20uses%20the%20same%20ship%20for%20the%20fall%20and%20spring%20semesters.%20But%20each%20summer,%20the%20%20%20ship%20sails%20with%20German%20cruise%20passengers%20under%20the%20name%20MV%20Deutchland.%20The%20Deutchland%20is%20%20%20well-known%20for%20its%20recurring%20role%20in%20a%20popular%20television%20series,%20?%20where%20it%20carries%20a%20%20%20green%20and%20white%20color%20scheme.%20So%20every%20fall%20Semester%20at%20Sea%20calls%20in%20a%20specialized%20painting%20%20%20crew%20with%20cranes,%20lifts,%20and%20paint%20brushes%20who%20set%20about%20converting%20the%20green%20and%20white%20%20%20Deutchland%20to%20the%20blue%20and%20white%20MV%20World%20Odyssey.%20%20%20In%20Hamburg,%20our%20embarkation%20port%20for%20Fall%202018,%20we%20witnessed%20the%20transformation%20to%20quickly%20%20%20cover%20the%20summer%27s%20Deutchland%20green%20with%20SAS%20blue,%20stencil%20on%20the%20Semester%20at%20Sea%20logo,%20and%20%20%20rebrand%20the%20MV%20World%20Odyssey.%20%20Yours%20in%20transition,%20Kelly%20%20%20%20%20https://johnston9494.blogspot.com/2018/08/732-mv-world-odyssey.html" target="_blank">blogged about the Deutschland</a>, well-known for its recurring role in a popular television series, <i>Das Traumship, ("The Dream Ship")</i> where she carries a green and white color scheme.<br />

So to make the transition every fall Semester at Sea calls in a specialized painting crew with cranes, lifts, and long-handled paint brushes who set about converting the green and white MV Deutschland to the blue and white MV World Odyssey.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

In Hamburg, our embarkation port for Fall 2018, we witnessed the transformation to quickly cover the summer's Deutschland green with SAS blue, stencil on the Semester at Sea logo, and re-brand the MV World Odyssey.<br />

<br />
The city sits on a sheltered natural harbor which has brought us back for a third visit. With so many rivers and canals, Hamburg has more bridges (~2,500) within its city limits than any other city in the world.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwO5R8Og5_yJOUyANdZNN9aEI2mQGrl1flJYcbeu9VLoDDqdTiVClSA12SrXYjeIEkQBeg_eQKMOHQg_sUkUtqtM7dSfmgmglGEi784XrlnbNvkTn8LhQzlYMvKRVHLITak2sttA/s1600/20180903+08+Hamburg%252C+canal.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="472" data-original-width="1600" height="187" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwO5R8Og5_yJOUyANdZNN9aEI2mQGrl1flJYcbeu9VLoDDqdTiVClSA12SrXYjeIEkQBeg_eQKMOHQg_sUkUtqtM7dSfmgmglGEi784XrlnbNvkTn8LhQzlYMvKRVHLITak2sttA/s640/20180903+08+Hamburg%252C+canal.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyI9jSPtJmyMwm14OIlPoCf5M7_8ZFXb46m2feqJArzLAgS2kZ_G2XsTtXVWHQsY0nBtCABCNh19ZHdNS6s1itDKHSAQucta7H60HtGc0X9ZiNabJbe4LGggRRHSoQ_c7UWJRBtw/s1600/IMG_9021.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1440" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyI9jSPtJmyMwm14OIlPoCf5M7_8ZFXb46m2feqJArzLAgS2kZ_G2XsTtXVWHQsY0nBtCABCNh19ZHdNS6s1itDKHSAQucta7H60HtGc0X9ZiNabJbe4LGggRRHSoQ_c7UWJRBtw/s640/IMG_9021.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The new concert hall, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elbphilharmonie">Elbphilharmonie</a>, is an architectural statement that opened last year, mirroring an ocean wave on the Elbe River. Tickets were impossible to get during our stay, but we admire the view from all angles. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjx_KzuroQ9FeJYDcXJ6pNn66kEV7vT7QYxUKZa89vAVZS4fcz1Fc2wzIWWV4v0WK1Bi7uPmpz0QbSz3bR7oMdZqEetVthMwCaO2xfem7sCAu8_9CtjciM0gcUSqul-QvaawtOmWw/s1600/20180903+07+Hamburg%252C+canal%252C+concert+hall.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1440" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjx_KzuroQ9FeJYDcXJ6pNn66kEV7vT7QYxUKZa89vAVZS4fcz1Fc2wzIWWV4v0WK1Bi7uPmpz0QbSz3bR7oMdZqEetVthMwCaO2xfem7sCAu8_9CtjciM0gcUSqul-QvaawtOmWw/s400/20180903+07+Hamburg%252C+canal%252C+concert+hall.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
And from the observation deck on the 8th floor between the original brick warehouse below and the new glass concert hall above, we appreciate the view of church spires in the background and a mix of the old and new.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguqcxPedQRzCeRmIGATLozuxdU9CM35131K0VjkZLIwSCd3GMIcPH8wX8AE8xVOnQ3_fPKUWQsYmGaJR_LBm4nFaUFDBLT8iq1e644LURSsdMbwcewjAlt7QNZPNZ-be6LxwGq6w/s1600/20180904+11+Hamburg%252C+concert+hall+view.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="682" data-original-width="1600" height="272" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguqcxPedQRzCeRmIGATLozuxdU9CM35131K0VjkZLIwSCd3GMIcPH8wX8AE8xVOnQ3_fPKUWQsYmGaJR_LBm4nFaUFDBLT8iq1e644LURSsdMbwcewjAlt7QNZPNZ-be6LxwGq6w/s640/20180904+11+Hamburg%252C+concert+hall+view.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The city keeps coming back from disasters such as the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_fire_of_Hamburg">1842 Hamburg fire</a>, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bombing_of_Hamburg_in_World_War_II">World War 2 bombing runs</a>, and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Sea_flood_of_1962">coastal flooding</a>. This 1888 building continues to thrive. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9M6nZ7bgrT9oArfV1a_P1pLAnwxdnIwMqK-ZlqidRgEuvWPf9eo0tqYu7yWTjH7d41hTGYaLih08HjQEVdJs6NACzeoyBg9JEcURRUzqX9jN053op_LA_yg2BRkINYC9_bBaNhA/s1600/20180903+09+Hamburg%252C+1888+building.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1440" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9M6nZ7bgrT9oArfV1a_P1pLAnwxdnIwMqK-ZlqidRgEuvWPf9eo0tqYu7yWTjH7d41hTGYaLih08HjQEVdJs6NACzeoyBg9JEcURRUzqX9jN053op_LA_yg2BRkINYC9_bBaNhA/s400/20180903+09+Hamburg%252C+1888+building.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
And the tower of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Nicholas%27_Church,_Hamburg">St. Nicholas' church</a> continues to stand despite being a focus of World War 2 bombers. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
The <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%9Cberseequartier_(Hamburg_U-Bahn_station)">Ubersee Quartier subway station</a> near our hotel has an underwater theme with darker blue tiles at the bottom. <br />

<br />
And the fabulous design continues indoors as well. At the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Museum_f%C3%BCr_Kunst_und_Gewerbe_Hamburg">Hamburg arts and crafts museum</a>, we admire and are mesmerized by the Spiegel Canteen designed by <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verner_Panton">Verner Panton</a>.<br />

<br />
When you travel from North America to another continent, you have two
options for travel: flying on an airplane or sailing on a ship. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBuy_tm4Ms_MEWmF5r-bPKqXHXotd0Q7QSLaxgcU49tYGB4P6Uq40WtUA_EZhA96Yd5RRYIrRIRtd8ymm-jgbzUyt8DIhTbKl430eOWfOjuBTFVrThQ3X3v5aOkeWB81ZHysWW5A/s1600/Getting-there-is-half-the-fun.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="777" data-original-width="1100" height="451" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBuy_tm4Ms_MEWmF5r-bPKqXHXotd0Q7QSLaxgcU49tYGB4P6Uq40WtUA_EZhA96Yd5RRYIrRIRtd8ymm-jgbzUyt8DIhTbKl430eOWfOjuBTFVrThQ3X3v5aOkeWB81ZHysWW5A/s640/Getting-there-is-half-the-fun.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
We choose sailing for lots of reasons.<br />
<br />
1) Since we don't leave the surface of the Earth when sailing, we have the opportunity to understand better where we are by slowly approaching a new destination at 20 mph rather than zooming overhead at 500 mph and dropping in from the heavens.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwSfrJWRwxRMBTCXWdnFIU_rsos_nqQdNAAbR5HSddp2rHtmv-o-bAZxQeWW2NagyotxpZ3aHgx9tIORVJ5VrAFHO571ZluhyphenhyphenI1Hhwk9neyZKLTZkMiDAcSSJQfn_8lf4VEKvupg/s1600/20180826+13+NY+QM2%252C+Manhattan.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="761" data-original-width="1600" height="304" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwSfrJWRwxRMBTCXWdnFIU_rsos_nqQdNAAbR5HSddp2rHtmv-o-bAZxQeWW2NagyotxpZ3aHgx9tIORVJ5VrAFHO571ZluhyphenhyphenI1Hhwk9neyZKLTZkMiDAcSSJQfn_8lf4VEKvupg/s640/20180826+13+NY+QM2%252C+Manhattan.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
2) The ocean is beautiful. The sun on the ocean is beautiful. The moon on the ocean is beautiful. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtaTyWUQKvVMpglUN_1BNv4860F_rtLlqjqX2QihjeSTwVYHl_nxmZEQsmZ0iPDUdI5s664ned_fSRHd1qMoqCjo1TMdDhN62VvLfhnjTprkVB_gBOkRjPRbMv2TyInreqeiBlwA/s1600/20180827+11+QM2%252C+moon.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1440" data-original-width="1080" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtaTyWUQKvVMpglUN_1BNv4860F_rtLlqjqX2QihjeSTwVYHl_nxmZEQsmZ0iPDUdI5s664ned_fSRHd1qMoqCjo1TMdDhN62VvLfhnjTprkVB_gBOkRjPRbMv2TyInreqeiBlwA/s400/20180827+11+QM2%252C+moon.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
3) The ship has a library! And the Queen Mary 2 library, the largest at sea, has just the right books to get our attention: <i>Dear Mrs. Bird</i> and <i>Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society</i> for me and <i>The Art of Cartographics</i> for Kelly. The librarians even check them out for reading on the deck.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaBGSLQHl_znYC_CmAhu9JRNuD3MnMD-bLA2ehVO9mZM3QJuWcAw7s8NDZrxeXUTZokBIUkZlHDPRt-vDaZlZnJdHPX-Uoabm7Ow2KNF86-Mawa_rwcsOSnljlG2oOz4AQDSW_vQ/s1600/20180827+04+QM2+library+-+Guernsey%252C+Dear+Mrs+Bird.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1440" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaBGSLQHl_znYC_CmAhu9JRNuD3MnMD-bLA2ehVO9mZM3QJuWcAw7s8NDZrxeXUTZokBIUkZlHDPRt-vDaZlZnJdHPX-Uoabm7Ow2KNF86-Mawa_rwcsOSnljlG2oOz4AQDSW_vQ/s640/20180827+04+QM2+library+-+Guernsey%252C+Dear+Mrs+Bird.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRQG8-eP7NlLWLemRBo2Ijw9Zk_-9_NaVvOJjZOHoCbXeLqyAu-XmQ754eOPk9_0wBY_6inLm90WvGj9kEm0aEmtRKmz6yRILjrlCvO1ZfqdF4y5Bpua4n8waZDnqMEBSyOaX-iA/s1600/20180828+03+QM2%252C+library%252C+Kelly.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1440" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRQG8-eP7NlLWLemRBo2Ijw9Zk_-9_NaVvOJjZOHoCbXeLqyAu-XmQ754eOPk9_0wBY_6inLm90WvGj9kEm0aEmtRKmz6yRILjrlCvO1ZfqdF4y5Bpua4n8waZDnqMEBSyOaX-iA/s640/20180828+03+QM2%252C+library%252C+Kelly.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
4) And then, there's the people factor. Those who make the deliberate choice to travel at 20 mph are not in a hurry. They like to promenade around the deck, read in the deck chair, take time for a conversation. These are my people. On our recent Atlantic crossing, we were overjoyed to be joined by two lifetime friends. And when those friends introduce us to their two friends, we form immediate connections and the crossing (and life) become even sweeter. <br />
<br />
Yours in sticking to the surface of the planet whenever possible,<br />
Mary Jo<br />
<br />
P.S. I haven't even mentioned the dancers.<br />

<br />
We often see Hamburg Sud containers loaded on rail cars passing our historic <a href="https://thelibrary.org/lochist/frisco/depots/lawrence.cfm">Aurora train depot</a> in Missouri, 4,714 miles from their home in northern Europe.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh34wK50Vr2ZKLbQqZP4WobauVD3m4-n2uMM5vOir10SHoEuN23kbcBC_YOnXi2vrC8IUikXda0kzEAd1Ms9yB7K4u8fhatzNZJSgVjBgOUjcCBWRGPS_9eikLc04gCMn7CQQLsow/s1600/IMG_8201.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="614" data-original-width="1600" height="244" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh34wK50Vr2ZKLbQqZP4WobauVD3m4-n2uMM5vOir10SHoEuN23kbcBC_YOnXi2vrC8IUikXda0kzEAd1Ms9yB7K4u8fhatzNZJSgVjBgOUjcCBWRGPS_9eikLc04gCMn7CQQLsow/s640/IMG_8201.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
Even since this little guy came into our lives, we pay extra close attention to these trains coming to town. Sometimes we stop and watch so we can see just who (JB Hunt, Hamburg Sud) is rolling by.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamburg_S%C3%BCd">Hamburg Sud</a>, mercifully short for Hamburg Südamerikanische Dampfschifffahrts-Gesellschaft ApS & Co KG, ranks among the ten largest container shipping brands and is
part of Denmark's <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maersk_Line">Maersk Line</a>, the world’s largest container shipping company. It employs 25,000 on land and 7,000 seafarers on 800 vessels. [from Wikipedia]<br />
<br />
In 2008, we spotted this Maersk ship in the Baltic Sea. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLX7bstF-pHe0zrWSedPQubHs6G9ubcSfGYsf9ZJthlG9vZNV27Uuy2y-MV0_Vp0yyU0Ln1kKfgphz7GAJb1NMPK1iG2OzFKQTjeEM-OMp9s2IbeZEz_lJZCH9GqGUn1Yre2eRtA/s1600/792+Maersk+Valetta.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="691" data-original-width="1600" height="276" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLX7bstF-pHe0zrWSedPQubHs6G9ubcSfGYsf9ZJthlG9vZNV27Uuy2y-MV0_Vp0yyU0Ln1kKfgphz7GAJb1NMPK1iG2OzFKQTjeEM-OMp9s2IbeZEz_lJZCH9GqGUn1Yre2eRtA/s640/792+Maersk+Valetta.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
And in 2014, we found this Maersk container welcoming us back to our ship, the MV Explorer, after a day spent exploring Isafjordur, Iceland. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoleZSXj1AltLvIQ_SYqQXPMUHtW9PxlqWAO4H4MdxAW13Sjb7-aqVn0HBt6XDGDfjmDYEMd1aivA-JwNb1UftdU2cLQ6dCYCrNzjWeBqDjqoTaWCWeYUCh1qBgcnSz8seY2SEKQ/s1600/20140609+Isafjordur+Maersk+shipping+container%252C+MV+Explorer.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoleZSXj1AltLvIQ_SYqQXPMUHtW9PxlqWAO4H4MdxAW13Sjb7-aqVn0HBt6XDGDfjmDYEMd1aivA-JwNb1UftdU2cLQ6dCYCrNzjWeBqDjqoTaWCWeYUCh1qBgcnSz8seY2SEKQ/s400/20140609+Isafjordur+Maersk+shipping+container%252C+MV+Explorer.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>

During our previous Semester at Sea voyages when the program was sponsored by the University of Virginia, the <a href="https://www.semesteratsea.org/2015/04/29/bon-voyage-mv-explorer/">MV Explorer</a>
was our shipboard home for more than 500 days/nights. We have a
gazillion photos of this modern ship built in 2001 but the
beautifully photographed <a href="https://maritimematters.com/2011/08/ship-shape-a-bow-to-stern-tour-of-the-mv-explorer-part-one/">article in Maritime Matters</a> is the place to go to best understand the contemporary style of our previous home.<br />

<br />
The <a href="https://www.semesteratsea.org/life-at-sea/our-ship/">MV World Odyssey</a> is the sixth shipboard home of the SAS program and we are eager to see it up close this fall. In 1998, she was built in Kiel, Germany - just north of our embarkation point in Hamburg.<br />

<br />
We have a lot to learn about our new ship, but we already know that she has a cinematic history. The German television show <i>Das Traumschiff</i> ("<i>The Dream Ship</i>"), based off the American TV series "<i>The Love Boat</i>", was filmed on board for 15 years. Fans of <i>The Dream Ship</i> have the opportunity to sail during the summer when the MV World Odyssey is not used for SAS. It would be fun to sail on The Love Boat, ie, the Pacific Princess, but it was decommissioned and taken apart for recycling in 2013.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I've done some serious cinematic research of films set on ocean liners, so I'm happy to have found this cinematic connection with the MV World Odyssey. For the official results of my research, see my <a href="https://johnston9494.blogspot.com/2012/05/531-top-20-films-at-sea.html">Top 20 Films at Sea</a> and even <a href="https://johnston9494.blogspot.com/2012/06/532-more-films-at-sea.html">More Films at Sea</a>.
